Food and service excellent, just a delay and misunderstanding around our table - which we found in the end!

Dating back to the 13th century, The Bear sits in the charming market town of Hungerford in the heart of the North Wessex Downs. Character packed inside and with a tranquil garden outside, The Bear serves up traditional British food, real ales and fine wines.

Specialising in trusty, home-cooked British recipes, The Bear menu is made up of time-honoured classics and inventive chef’s specials. The signature beef & ale pie is a creation from much-loved celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, while favourite world flavours include sizzling steak fajitas, or aubergine and roast beetroot curry. Gourmet sandwiches and jacket potatoes are served throughout the day, and guests can round things off with an indulgent crumble, cheesecake or sundae.

The drinks list at The Bear pub features carefully-chosen beers and international wines, and a lengthy list of soft drinks. Younger diners are not forgotten, with a varied menu for both lunch and dinner, and a mini roast served on Sundays.

The Bear is a 9-minute walk from Hungerford Rail Station.

Some of the food was cold when it came out and the service was very slow. When we mentioned this the waitress commented that she was serving in the restaurant, bar and at a function at the other end of the building and no apology! Didn't seem very well organised.

Nice food, reasonably priced and good service. Pleasant and helpful staff. quitea good range of menu options, possibly could be a little wider. The only slightly irritating thing is having to pay to park while dining.

Lovely cosy atmosphere in the restaurant and our roast Sunday lunch was excellent.
