From Michelin-starred chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin, Galvin at The Athenaeum champions the finest in British produce. Stepping away from their trademark French-inspired menus, modern takes on classic British dishes join Galvin favourites and a quintessential afternoon tea within this famous hotel.

The Galvin menu showcases a host of rich flavours, in dishes such as Dingley Dell pork belly with black pudding and an apple and hazelnut salad, yellowfin tuna burger with white cabbage slaw and avocado, and potato gnocchi with braised short rib and Portobello mushrooms. Galvin classics include duck liver parfait with red onion marmalade and toasted brioche, and steak tartare with toasted sourdough.

    A lovely place for lunch when in town. A really great choice of dishes on the set menu. Terrific value. It was a sunny day so we had our coffee outside and thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate truffles that came with it!

    My wife, daughter & myself were celebrating my birthday. My daughter arrived first and sat in the foyer lounge. The 'meet & greet' was non-existent. No one from Reception asked if they could help; she could have been a 'mystery guest'! We subsequently all arrived & were directed to the bar & enjoyed delicious, well prepared cocktails pre-dinner. On arriving at the dining room we were taken to the table & immediately offered water & drinks with the menu. After ordering we were served our complimentary glasses of Brut. The whole meal was delicious, professionally served and gaps between courses were well timed. Our waiter was charming, helpful & unobtrusive. ( don't know his name, he was short, bearded & wearing glasses). We had the set menu which we thought was excellent value with an interesting choice. The final impressive touch was when the waiter brought a small dish of chocolates with a candle for my birthday. We hadn't advised of this event, but he must have noticed the birthday card on the table. He should be complimented & 'Employee of the month'! Thank you all the dining room & kitchen staff for brilliant food & service.

    Our party of three had afternoon tea with a glass a champagne. Sandwiches were fresh and although nothing exceptional were tasty and adequate. The variety of cakes were good and although we had to request more cream for the scones, this was provided promptly with no fuss. Also, more milk for the tea had to be provided as we did not get a jug of milk each. We were offered more sandwiches, tea and cakes which was a nice gesture. The table was booked for 14:30 but we arrived early and was seated at 14:00 for which we were grateful. We were provided with water at our request (sparkling) at no extra cost.
    Staff were attentive helpful and very smart in their uniforms and we noticed on the booking that the dress code for customers is "smart casual". Two members of our party had traveled from the North West of England that morning, via public transport, and made the effort to ensure that attire was fitting for the occasion and at the request of the establishment. However, this dress code was not adhered to by all customers and we witnessed two females dressed in tracksuit bottoms, dirty converse trainers, hoody tops and wearing baseball caps (which remained on whilst dining) seated at a table near to us. This dress code seemed more at home at a fast food establishment and not what we were expecting during our visit. No one challenged the females and we left wondering why Galvin at The Athenaeum bothered with a dress code at all if they did not enforce it. We felt that if an establishment wants to keep a more 'up market' reputation, giving customers a higher quality experience, then standards from guests should be anticipated and maintained. We have experienced other eating establishments that may not appear to be as exceptional, but would not allow customers to sit with baseball caps on whilst dining. We left feeling disappointed that this relaxed attitude and slip in standards meant we would find it difficult to recommend the restaurant to friends.
