Housed in the artistic hub of Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory, Artisan featured in The Times’ 25 Best Places for Sunday Lunch 2014. Packed with fresh, regional ingredients, the creative food is British in inspiration, with rich flavour combinations.

Mirroring the vibrancy of its arty location, the Artisan menu adds extravagance to classic British and European dishes. Start with the indulgently rich homemade black pudding with pear purée, brioche and poached egg, or caramelised king scallops with glazed pork belly. Led by regionally sourced meat and fish, mains include cured bacon chop with caramelised apple, bubble and squeak and Madeira sauce, and pan-fried turbot with smoked pancetta and a broad bean and pea risotto.

In the UK’s largest art, craft and design gallery, Artisan restaurant showcases contemporary sculptures in its 25 foot glass walls. Rich colours and modern furnishings contrast with rustic exposed brick walls to create a unique, laid-back setting.

In the Shieldfield area of the city, Artisan in Newcastle is a 14-minute walk from Manors Train Station.

Food was excellent. Service good mostly. Restaurant had nice ambience . Only negative was that after our meal we were contemplating having a coffee but no staff approached our table so in the end we just went and paid the bill.

I had a delicious soup to start and my mum said her black pudding was yummy too. I then had a beef roast, each vegetable had its own distinctive flavour and just the right amount. My mum had the soufflé, this came with an enticing side salad however she found it tricky to eat from the small bowel and there was no plate to tip it onto. We finished off with some marvellously rich desserts. The atmospher had energy and the decor modern and clean. The only disappointing aspect was when I asked the waitress what one of the dishes consisted of she didn't know, though she did go and ask.
