Pleasant atmosphere with lunch customers all grouped together in a smaller space. I had fish and chips which was OK but nothing special. Small wine portion was really quite small!

Hidden behind an unassuming front, Abbey bar and restaurant houses a labyrinth of contemporary dining rooms. Set within the heart of Aldgate, Abbey offers a range of British comfort classics, along with freshly-muddled cocktails and cherry-picked beers and wines.

Rich and smooth potted duck served with a dollop of apple chutney and toasted ciabatta leads the light bites on the Abbey menu, alongside a warm and gooey baked boxed camembert coupled with cranberry jam and a crusty baguette. From the grill, a 28-day, dry-aged rib eye steak is paired with chunky chips and a green peppercorn sauce, while trusty sandwiches include fish finger and roast chicken fillings.

Suitably mismatched furnishing packs the cosmopolitan space, while bold artwork and block colours pepper the ultra-modern dining rooms. A circular snug room caters for more intimate dinners, while a garden-inspired room delivers a dose of fresh, al fresco-style dining.

Just a 7-minute walk away from the famous Tower of London, Abbey bar and restaurant in London is a 3-minute walk to Aldgate Tube Station.

I made a booking online. Once turned up to the restaurant, the table was not booked for us. We were accommodated, however this was not very good impression (especially as I was there with the team and our boss). The service was rather slow, and when it came to serving- the mains came for everyone but me. I received a side and was told that my main was on its way. It didn't come until everyone else finished their main course, and my side was cold. Apparently my main was sent to the wrong table (originally I was told that there was a confusion in the kitchen). I asked for a new side, but what I got was the one i had, just heated in microwave. I was offered a drink as a compensation (this was work lunch, and none of was drinking, so that was not an option- they have seen all of us not drinking!). Eventually, all we have received was 50% of my meal! this was all for ruining the dinning experience for all of us. I would not recommend this place for lunch.
In terms of food- the couscous salad that was one of the specials on the day- it was totally overcooked, the portions were very unequal (we had 3 of these on our table and they varied from very large to very little!). The coleslaw side was advertised as a one with apple etc.- it came as a normal coleslaw that you can buy in Tesco value. The gnocchi were advertised as 'crispy' (or fried... or something along these lines)- it came as most simple ones. Overall we left very unimpressed and with a regret for booking there.
